MALACAÑANG on Friday ordered the implementation of alternative learning modes and learning continuity measures in all public and private educational institutions in Metro Manila and 15 provinces, in anticipation of continued heavy rainfall.

The directive was contained in Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 134 signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, following the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

MC No. 134 covers Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro

The order was issued in view of the anticipated continued heavy rainfall associated with the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) and the poor air quality currently being experienced in Metro Manila due to haze from severe forest and peatland fires Kalimantan and Sumatra, Indonesia.

Local chief executives may also order the cancellation or suspension of classes in their respective areas, pursuant to existing laws, rules and regulations.

“The localized cancellation or suspension of classes in other areas may be implemented by their respective local chief executives, pursuant to relevant laws, rules, and regulations,” the order read.

MC No. 134 takes effect immediately. (PNA)
