SOME Filipino nurses questioned the Department of Education after a module referencing them as ‘katulong’ or helper of doctors went viral on social media this week.

The nurses took their dismay to Twitter and slammed the circulating screenshot of a learning material that features job descriptions of a carpenter, a nurse and a chef.

A carpenter was described as ‘gumagawa ng bahay’ while a chef was described as ‘tagaluto ng masasarap na pagkain’.

A nurse, on the other hand, was described as ‘katulong o kasama ng doctor’.

Netizens were incensed, stressing that such information is disrespectful and degrading to the nursing community.

“You are bringing down the nurses here in the Philippines too much, the salary is already low here in the Philippines. Please do not do that,” a nurse lamented.

“Is this the best description DepEd can give to our nurses? No. Perhaps, they can describe them without associating them with doctors. Nurses are as important as our doctors. They can rather say, ‘nag-aalaga sa mga sakit’ or something better,” another nurse said.

Amid the negative comments, the source of said learning material remains unclear. There was also no clear indication that the module was approved by the DepEd.

Diosdado San Antonio, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction, said the agency will conduct an inquiry.

Early this month, DepEd withdrew learning modules that maligned  Igorots.

It said that learning material was a ‘locally-developed document’.
