Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio said that there is no requirement that the next Education Secretary should be from the education sector.

“The position of the Secretary is a position of trust and confidence, unang una. Pangalawa, walang nakalagay na requirements para sa isang education secretary,” Duterte-Carpio said.

“In fact dito sa Southeast Asia kung makikita ninyo, hindi lahat ng education secretaries are from the education sector,” she added.

Duterte-Carpio’s resignation will take effect on July 19.

She also said that she has been focusing on the transition and turnover for the next DepEd Secretary.

Groups earlier said that the next DepEd Secretary should be from the education sector.

“Aside from this, the next secretary should be an excellent manager since that person will be managing the largest bureaucracy in the country. This individual will oversee the department with the most personnel, the most geographically dispersed operations, and the greatest resources,” Teachers’ Dignity Coalition Chairperson Benjo Basas said last week days after Duterte tendered her resignation.
