MATATAG CURRICULUM WILL IMPROVE FUNCTIONAL LITERACY – LAWMAKER

/ 14 August 2023

PASIG CITY Representative Roman Romulo believes that the revised K to 10 curriculum, otherwise known as the MATATAG curriculum, will help improve functional literacy in the Philippines.

Romulo said that reducing the number of competencies and focusing on foundational skills such as literacy and numeracy would boost the academic performance of Filipino learners.

He said the revised curriculum will be decongested to reduce the number of competencies to the most essential.

“Ang solusyon po nila, proposal nila – bawasan natin ang subjects, bawasan natin ang competencies – tumutok lang tayo sa tinatawag kong reading, reading, reading at basic mathematics,” he said.

“Sayang po ang talino at galing ng Pilipino kung hindi rin po mabibigyan ng ating education system ng paghahanda na maging job ready or college ready,” he added.

He stressed that the current curriculum failed to meet the K-12 promise of employment after graduation from senior high school.

The MATATAG Curriculum will be implemented in School Year 2024-2025 for Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4, and 7.

In School Year 2025-2026, Grades 2, 5, and 8 will be under the new curriculum with Grades 3, 6, and 9 in SY 2026-2027 while Grade 10 learners will join them on School Year 2027-2028.
