ISINUSULONG ni Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. ang panukala na gawing mandatory ang Bible reading sa lahat ng public elementary at secondary schools.

Sa kanyang House Bill 2069 o ang proposed Mandatory Bible Reading Act, nais ni Abante na isama sa English at Filipino subjects ang pagbabasa, pagtalakay at eksaminasyon sa Bibliya.

Sa mga estudyanteng Muslim, isasama ang pagbabasa ng Koran.

“While we have earned the identity of being the only Christian nation in Asia, it seems that we have not truly appreciated the relevance, importance and power of one Book, called the Bible —  a literary masterpiece, the best seller of all books in the world, and the only book that contains a truly lasting solution to man’s and society’s problems,” pahayag ni Abante sa kanyang explanatory note.

Sa panukala, mandato ng Department of Education na bumuo ng implementing rules and regulations para sa epektibong pagpapatupad ng batas.

Naniniwala ang kongresista na kung palagiang mababasa, maipoproklama, susundin at isasagawa ang mga nilalaman ng Bibliya, tiyak na mas magiging maayos ang bansa.

“If only Biblical discipline, principles and standards are taught and inculcated in the minds of our children, there would be no much problems on leadership, governance, and peace and order,” diin pa ng kongresista.
