LEARNING DEVELOPMENT SEEN WITH PHONE-BASED TUTORING PROGRAM
THE DEPARTMENT of Education has reported “significant development” in learners’ numeracy skills through a phone-based tutoring program.
In partnership with Poverty Action and Youth Impact, DepEd has implemented the mEducation program, an evidence-based education initiative. This program uses weekly messages and phone calls to provide targeted math instruction to Grade 3 to 5 learners.
“The mEducation program embraces technology to address challenges in learning recovery and remediation for learners with specific needs in mathematics. The phone-based tutoring approach makes learning more accessible, personal, and collaborative,” said DepEd MIMAROPA Regional Director Nicolas Capulong.
The initial implementation of the program, conducted from April to July 2024, involved 1,015 learners and 265 teachers across 90 schools in nine School Division Offices.
Results showed that 20-minute tutoring sessions over an eight-week period significantly improved academic performance.
Poverty Action and Youth Impact have expressed their commitment to expanding the mEducation program to other regions, including the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
