LAWMAKERS URGE CHED TO ASSIST PLM IN THEIR DIRE FINANCIAL SITUATION
AT LEAST six lawmakers are advocating for a resolution urging the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to assist the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), which is facing a dire financial situation due to the non-payment and non-reimbursement of adjusted tuition and other laboratory fees.
House Resolution 2126 was filed by Representatives Rolando Valeriano, Ernestor Dionisio Jr., Joel Chua, Edward Vera Perez Maceda, Irwin Tieng, and Bienvenido Abante Jr.
The lawmakers explained that in February 2023, PLM submitted its new rates for tuition and other school fees to CHED, which took effect in Academic Year 2023-2024. However, after two fiscal years, CHED has yet to reimburse PLM using the new rates.
The solons noted that PLM has been operating at a loss and has been covering its operating deficits from past years with its reserves, which have now been depleted.
“If CHED and UNIFAST continue to reimburse PLM using the old rates, the PLM would not have enough funds to continue operating beyond the middle of next year,” the solons stated in the resolution.
