FOUR lawmakers filed a measure that seeks to provide grants to business and education partnerships for the purpose of establishing and operating model high schools of Science and Mathematics.

Representatives Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr., Miguel Luis Villafuerte, Tsuyoshi Anthony Horibata and Nicolas Enciso VIII introduced House Bill 3683 or the proposed Model High Schools Act.

They stressed the need to put up more specialized curriculum schools “if we are to pursue advances in Science and mathematics.”

“It is an overwhelming task for educational institutions, without the collaboration of the private sector and incentives from the government,” they added.

Under the measure, the Department of Education will provide not more than ten grants to business and education partnerships as part of the government’s share of the costs of planning, establishing and operating high schools of Science and Mathematics.

The lawmakers said that advances in Science and Mathematics depend on the quantity and quality of the country’s mathematicians and scientists.

They pointed to the Philippine Science High School, which had been very successful in producing leaders and scholars in the sciences.

“They promote excellence and upgrade the quality of science programs within the broader school system,” the lawmakers said.
