LAWMAKER URGES STRONGER PROTECTION FOR CHILDREN IN TOURIST DESTINATIONS
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian called for stronger protective measures for children visiting tourist destinations, especially during the upcoming summer season.
As families prepare for trips to beaches and other popular vacation spots, Gatchalian stressed the importance of ensuring that adequate medical and emergency services are available to safeguard the well-being of young vacationers.
He emphasized the need for fully equipped health facilities, trained first responders, and clear safety protocols to create a secure environment for children.
The senator raised concerns about the rising number of child drownings at beaches and swimming pools, often due to insufficient safety measures. He noted that these tragic incidents are preventable through proactive safety measures.
Gatchalian called for heightened coordination between local government units, tourism establishments, and healthcare providers to establish comprehensive safety standards and response systems that would protect children from harm during their vacations.
To address these concerns, Senator Gatchalian introduced Senate Bill No. 1142, also known as the Lifeguard Act of 2022, which outlines the responsibilities of pool operators and local government units in maintaining water safety standards and preventing accidents like drownings.
He also emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of safety in tourist destinations. “We can prevent accidents if we ensure readiness and implement the right measures for the safety of our citizens,” he said.
The senator believes that through proper planning and preparedness, local government units and tourism establishments can significantly enhance the safety of children visiting popular destinations.
Gatchalian reiterated that the protection of children should always be a top priority, especially in environments like beaches and swimming pools where risks are inherent.
