LAWMAKER SEEKS SENATE HEARING ON DEPED’S PROPOSED TRIMESTRAL SHIFT

/ 15 February 2026

SENATOR Bam Aquino called for broad consultations and a Senate hearing before the Department of Education (DepEd) implements its proposal to shift to a trimestral system starting School Year 2026–2027.

DepEd earlier floated the move to a three-term academic calendar, saying it aims to create longer and more flexible instructional periods, reduce teacher workload, and improve instruction quality through better organization of the school year.

Aquino, however, stressed that such a major reform must undergo careful review and public consultation.

“Before DepEd implements the trimestral system, it is important that it undergoes extensive consultation. We will ensure there will be a Senate hearing so this reform can be thoroughly examined and discussed,” Aquino said.

As chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Aquino emphasized support for proposals that address learning gaps and assist teachers, who are currently burdened with non-teaching tasks. He acknowledged the need for comprehensive reforms in basic education but cautioned against rushing structural changes without dialogue with stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and education experts.

“While we recognize the need for wide-ranging reform, we must ensure it is not done hastily and goes through proper consultation,” he added.

The proposed shift to a trimestral system is part of broader efforts by DepEd to improve learning outcomes and ease administrative burdens on teachers. Aquino underscored that any change to the academic calendar must be carefully studied to ensure it benefits both learners and educators.
