LAWMAKER SEEKS HOUSE PROBE OF MILITARY STRAFING

/ 27 July 2023

GABRIELA Women’s Party-list Representative Arlene Brosas filed a resolution urging the Committee on the Welfare of Children and Committee on Human Rights to immediately investigate the alleged spate of aerial bombings and strafing by the military on communities which affects children.

House Resolution 1135 highlighted several incidents where the Philippine Army and other military units conducted aerial bombings and strafing on communities, resulting in the displacement of families and the disruption of children’s education.

It also noted the physical and emotional trauma experienced by children because of these attacks that could lead to long-term psychological damage.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to the alarming increase in aerial bombings and indiscriminate firing on communities, especially when it comes to the welfare and safety of our children,” Brosas said.

The lawmaker pointed out the contradiction between the spate of military attacks and the recent pronouncement of amnesty for rebels by the Marcos Jr. administration during the State of the Nation Address.

She said that the government used Black Hawk choppers in bombing and strafing communities, contrary to its press release that it will be used for credible defense posture.

“This state-perpetrated violence raises concerns about the government’s commitment to peace and the protection of children’s rights. The government must ensure that the military is held accountable for any violations of international humanitarian law and the rights of children,” Brosas stressed.

“If President Marcos Jr. is sincere in his offer for peace, then he must walk-the-talk and address the spate of aerial bombings and rights violations in our communities which have dire impacts on children. We urge our fellow legislators to support this resolution and join us in our fight for justice and peace,” she said.
