LAWMAKER REITERATES FULL SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS IN MAKE-UP CLASS ROLLOUT

/ 31 July 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday reiterated his call for comprehensive support for teachers tasked with conducting make-up classes, stressing that proper resources, fair compensation, and administrative support are essential to the success of ongoing learning recovery efforts.

“I reiterate my call to fully support our teachers so they can effectively conduct make-up classes,” Gatchalian said.

“They need updated lesson guides and modules, access to technology like laptops, and administrative assistance to reduce paperwork so they can focus on teaching,” he added.

He also underscored the need to fairly compensate teachers for overtime work and teaching overload, especially as many are now carrying additional responsibilities following recent class disruptions.

“These steps will ensure the success of make-up classes in preventing learning loss. Let’s not just give them extra work—let’s also give them extra support,” he emphasized.

Gatchalian has long been a leading advocate for sustained learning recovery measures, especially in response to disruptions caused by the pandemic, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

His statement comes amid concerns from educators and teachers’ groups about the lack of resources as schools implement extended schedules or weekend sessions to make up for lost instructional time.

He urged the Department of Education and local governments to work closely together to ensure teachers’ needs are addressed in real time, and that no teacher is left behind in the push to recover learning outcomes.
