LAWMAKER PUSHES TOUGHER RULES TO SHIELD YOUTH FROM VAPING RISKS
SENATOR Risa Hontiveros has called for a comprehensive review and strengthening of existing policies regulating vaporized nicotine and non-nicotine products, citing growing concerns over their impact on Filipino youth.
Hontiveros underscored the government’s responsibility to safeguard public health, particularly the well-being of young people. “Our responsibility is to ensure that our laws truly protect public health, especially the health and well-being of our young people,” she said.
The senator raised alarm over the rapid proliferation of vape products in the market, noting that their colorful packaging, sweet flavors, and aggressive online marketing strategies make them especially appealing—and accessible—to minors.
“This is not simply about consumer choice; this is about public health and the future of our youth,” she stressed.
Hontiveros also warned about the potential dangers posed by certain vape cartridges that may contain cannabis-infused oil or other harmful substances, which could expose users—particularly minors—to serious health risks.
Her call comes amid heightened scrutiny of the vaping industry, as policymakers weigh stricter measures to curb youth access and strengthen consumer protections.
The hearing forms part of ongoing Senate efforts to review current regulations and explore reforms aimed at addressing emerging public health concerns linked to vaping.
