LAWMAKER PUSHES FINANCIAL LITERACY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUBJECTS IN HIGH SCHOOL
SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go is seeking to institutionalize financial literacy and entrepreneurship as core subjects in junior and senior high school to better equip Filipino students for real-world challenges.
Under Senate Bill No. 672, filed during the 20th Congress, Go aims to strengthen the K–12 curriculum by mandating the inclusion of these subjects in both public and private schools.
“Kung matututo na ang kabataan natin sa tamang paghawak ng pera at sa pagnenegosyo habang nasa eskwela pa lang, mas magiging handa silang harapin ang hamon ng buhay,” said Go, emphasizing that economic empowerment begins in the classroom.
The measure seeks to amend Republic Act No. 10679 (Youth Entrepreneurship Act) to deepen its integration into the education system. It also calls on DepEd, CHED, and TESDA to institutionalize related programs at all education levels—from foundational values in elementary to advanced training in higher and technical education.
Go’s proposal includes multi-sector consultations to design relevant and practical content, engaging educators, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. He cited a 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report showing 46% of Filipinos already had a positive view of entrepreneurship opportunities—proof, he said, of the potential to develop this mindset among youth.
