LAWMAKER: INTEGRATE LESSONS ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM
CAMARINES Sur 3rd District Representative Gabriel Bordado Jr. filed a measure that seeks to integrate lessons on climate change and environmental protection in the curriculum of basic education.
House Bill 6530 or the proposed Climate Change and Environmental Protection Education Act mandates the Department of Education to include climate change and environment protection in appropriate subjects in the basic education curriculum. The lessons shall emphasize how schoolchildren could help in protecting the environment.
Bordado said that climate change is quickly becoming a daunting issue that the world can no longer ignore.
“Effects of this crisis, such as extreme storm surges and droughts and heavy flooding, have been plaguing countries across the globe,” he said in his explanatory note.
He added that the Philippines is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. He also said that failure to address the worsening crisis will result in losses in property and even lives.
“The youth will be the future stakeholders and leaders that would soon take an active role in reversing the effects of climate change. Therefore, raising awareness during their formative years in school would better equip them for the environmental challenges ahead,” Bordado said.
