LAWMAKER EYES MAGNA CARTA FOR E-SPORTS
PARAÑAQUE City’s 2nd District Rep. Gus Tambunting filed a bill that will create the Magna Carta for E-Sports to protect the interests of players and workers.
House Bill 7888 or the proposed Magna Carta for Esports Gamers aims to establish a legislative framework that will safeguard and advance the rights and welfare of Esports players.
Tambunting said Esports has become tremendously popular, with millions of people, particularly the youth, playing video games competitively.
Even in the Philippines, Esports has had substantial growth and multiple events and contests are held annually.
Its rising popularity makes it urgent to address the lack of a legal framework and protection for Esports players, he said. A large number of workers do not have benefits such as health insurance.
“With millions of dollars in annual prize money, sponsorship fees, and advertising income, esports has also developed into a lucrative sector,” the lawmaker said.
