LAWMAKER CONDOLES WITH FAMILY OF STUDENT WHO DIED IN TAGUIG SCHOOL
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian expressed his condolences to the family of a Grade 10 student who died in a public school in Taguig, while stressing the importance of strengthening mental health support in schools.
“Taos-puso akong nakikiramay sa mga naulila ng Grade 10 student na binawian ng buhay sa isang pampublikong paaralan sa Taguig,” Gatchalian said, expressing sympathy for the bereaved family.
He noted that authorities withheld certain details about the incident to respect the privacy of the victim’s family and the school community. However, Gatchalian emphasized that the case underscores ongoing concerns that demand a proactive response from education authorities.
The senator pointed out that similar incidents in recent years highlight the need to fully implement the school-based mental health program mandated under the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act.
“Schools must move beyond reacting to individual cases and ensure that systems are in place to support students’ mental health and well-being,” he said.
Gatchalian added that he will continue working with education stakeholders to ensure schools remain safe and that learners receive adequate mental health support.
