LAWMAKER CALLS FOR STRONGER EDUCATION SYSTEM AMID TRANSPORT STRIKE

/ 26 March 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday emphasized the need to strengthen the education sector’s resilience in the face of external crises, following the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the three-day transport strike.

While class suspensions provide relief to students and teachers, Gatchalian highlighted a deeper, long-standing issue—the education sector’s vulnerability to disruptions. He stressed that learning should not stop every time a crisis arises and called for the reinforcement of alternative delivery modes to ensure continuous education.

The senator underscored the importance of accelerating digitalization in schools to facilitate learning continuity and improve workflow efficiency. He warned that the education crisis could worsen if the government fails to implement modern solutions and adapt to evolving challenges.

“As we safeguard the welfare of our students, we must also ensure that learning continues. We can no longer rely on a ‘business-as-usual’ approach to addressing challenges in our education system,” Gatchalian said.

He reiterated the need for urgent reforms to create a more resilient, adaptive, and future-ready education system.
