HOUSE PANEL PROMOTES GOOD NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN

/ 24 November 2024

THE HOUSE of Representatives recently hosted a seminar to promote awareness of healthy lifestyles among children and Filipinos.

The event, titled Champions of Children’s Optimal (COCO) Heart Health, underscored the vital role of parents, guardians, educators, and healthcare professionals in ensuring that children grow up strong, resilient, and healthy.

Committee on the Welfare of Children Chairperson Rep. Angelica Natasha Co emphasized that a healthy heart is more than just a physical necessity; it is essential for children’s energy, strength, and ability to thrive.

“The choices we make today, from providing nutritious meals to encouraging physical activity and regular health checks, play a pivotal role in securing their future,” Co said.

Co’s advocacy for children’s heart health was inspired by the recent passing of her 12-year-old godchild, Coco Francisco, from heart disease. She described Coco as a bright young boy, saying, “His life may be short, but this story will touch many lives, and today we start to weave that story so that for many children, this will be the heart of a bright and healthy future for all of them—heart health, that is what our advocacy will be.”

As vice chairperson of the Committee on Health, Co highlighted the prevalence of congenital heart conditions and the need for early screening, awareness, and quality healthcare to prevent tragic outcomes.

Dr. Alberto Atilano, director of the Foundation for Lay Education on Heart Diseases, spoke on cardiovascular disease prevention and emphasized the shift toward primary prevention, with the Department of Health partnering with local government units.

Co encouraged participants to bring their learnings back to their families and communities, saying, “Together, we can make heart health a foundation of our children’s growth and well-being.”

The forum was part of National Children’s Month, with students from Polytechnic University of the Philippines Quezon City in attendance.
