GSIS TO GRANT STEM SUBSIDIES TO 1K COLLEGE FRESHMEN
THE GOVERNMENT Service Insurance System will provide educational grants to 1,000 incoming college freshmen for Academic Year 2026–2027 under its newly launched GSIS Subsidy for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program.
The initiative supports the national government’s push to strengthen economic competitiveness through education, particularly in high-demand STEM fields.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has repeatedly underscored the importance of STEM education as part of his economic agenda, noting that innovation and agility will be key to survival in the coming years.
“Our program is a direct response to the President’s call for a technologically proficient workforce,” GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso said. “By supporting the education of these young minds, we are building a pipeline of talent that will drive innovation and secure our nation’s economic future.”
Each qualified grantee will receive an annual subsidy of P15,000 to help cover educational expenses, amounting to P15 million per batch each year.
The program will run for four academic years, from AY 2026 to 2030, and is expected to benefit a total of 4,000 students. Overall, GSIS has allocated ₱240 million for the program through 2034.
The GSIS Subsidy for STEM Program will be open to children of active GSIS members and permanent total disability pensioners below 60 years old.
To promote inclusivity, 200 of the 1,000 annual slots will be reserved for children of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo parents.
Priority will be given to applicants whose parents fall under Salary Grade 15 and below or receive lower pension amounts.
Applicants must be incoming first-year college students admitted to a STEM course at a Philippine college or university recognized by the Commission on Higher Education, and must have earned a senior high school general weighted average of at least 90 percent.
Since 1998, GSIS has provided educational assistance to nearly 28,000 dependents of its active members, spending a total of P836 million on scholarships and educational subsidies.
The shift toward a STEM-focused subsidy program reflects the institution’s alignment with the country’s long-term goal of developing a skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and sustainable economic growth.
The application and submission period for the GSIS Subsidy for STEM Program will begin on June 30, 2026.
