GROUP SEEKS JUSTICE FOR SLAIN JOURNALISTS

/ 5 November 2021

THE College Editors Guild of the Philippines sought justice for the journalists who were attacked and killed because of their profession.

According to National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, there were 87 media-related killings in the country from 2006-2019. Almost 82 percent of these cases remain unresolved while 9.2 percent were closed.

“We, campus journalists, as vanguards of the truth of schools and communities, stand alongside our fellow media practitioners harassed, intimidated, and attacked by the state and the oppressors that further aggravate the situation of the marginalized, exploited, and oppressed masses,” the group said.

It noted that 21 journalists have been killed under the Duterte regime.

“Filipino media workers also suffered different attacks and intimidation,” CEGP said.

It reiterated that journalists are not enemies of the state but companions who play a huge role in helping the nation progress.

“Thus, justice must be served not hindered! The diverse and collective voice of the masses should be heard not crippled! The call must be answered! No more media killings!”
