FREE EDUCATION IS AN INVESTMENT IN THE NATION’S FUTURE, SAYS SENATOR
SENATOR Christopher Go underscored that free education is an investment in the country’s future as he welcomed the Senate’s approval of a measure aimed at strengthening access to tertiary education for indigent students.
Go expressed support for Senate Bill No. 1894, or the proposed Enhanced Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education (UAQTE) Act, which was approved on third and final reading in the Senate.
According to the senator, despite the implementation of Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, many Filipino students — particularly those from low-income families and underserved communities — continue to face difficulties in accessing quality education.
Go said the proposed measure seeks to expand tertiary education subsidies for indigent students, giving them more opportunities to pursue higher education and technical training.
“Through this bill, we aim to provide tertiary education subsidies to indigent students. This means expanding their opportunities and giving them more choices. In areas where certain degree programs are not available, students may avail themselves of these programs through private universities,” Go said.
The senator also emphasized that the subsidy program would not be limited to public colleges and universities, noting that qualified students may also use the assistance in private higher education institutions, especially in areas where public schools are not accessible.
“This initiative is not limited to public colleges and universities. The subsidy may also be used in private higher education institutions, especially in places where there are no public schools available. I firmly believe that access to education is the key to a brighter future for our youth,” he added.
Senate Bill No. 1894 seeks to amend Republic Act No. 10931 by broadening the coverage of tertiary education subsidies and prioritizing financially vulnerable students in government educational assistance programs.
