EDCOM 2 CONSULTS TEACHERS ON K TO 12 CURRICULUM
SECOND Congressional Commission on Education Advisory Council Member Fr. Bienvenido Nebres assured teachers and educators that they are ready to listen to their views on the K to 12 curriculum.
“Learning happens in the classroom, not in central government offices…Nandito kami para makinig sa inyo. We really want to learn from you,” Nebres told more than 100 teachers and educators who participated in the Curriculum Validation and Teacher Consultation recently.
The activity was attended by teachers from 74 schools, with participants coming from as far as Dumaguete, Davao, and Zamboanga.
During the two-day activity, EDCOM 2 members and participants from partner organizations facilitated discussions to validate whether the revised K to 10 curriculum has been decongested.
Early observations by the Commission found that the participants welcomed the Department of Education’s efforts to decongest the curriculum to allow more time for children to master priority competencies.
They also agreed with the teaching approaches specified by the revised K to 10 curriculum.
The participants identified some subject areas that appear to be congested, repetitive or need to be properly sequenced.
“The curriculum should be realistic, implementable, and good,” EDCOM 2 Executive Director Dr. Karol Mark Yee reminded the participants.
“Sometimes, we aim for the ideal, the perfect curriculum, but oftentimes this gets in the way of realistic implementation,” he added.
The Department of Education released in April the draft K to 10 curriculum. The revised curriculum will be implemented in 2025.
