DLSU PROFESSOR WINS 2023 ASEAN-US SCIENCE PRIZE FOR WOMEN

/ 24 October 2023

A DISTINGUISHED professor from De La Salle University has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-United States Science Prize for Women.

Dr. Charlle Sy, who also serves as the Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, claimed this esteemed accolade within the mid-career scientist category, emerging victorious among 51 applicants.

Dr. Sy’s recognition is the result of her pioneering research in “micro hydro systems for electricity generation within local communities.” Her work harnesses advanced mathematical modeling techniques that incorporate uncertainties, culminating in more efficient and sustainable energy solutions, as stated by DLSU.

The announcement of the award winners was made during a ceremony held last week, organized by the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development and UL Research Institutes.

This year’s competition centered on the theme of “electrification,” with a focus on celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of women within the ASEAN region who are dedicated to “advancing science for electricity production from renewable and clean energy sources, with a view to delivering economic benefits while safeguarding the environment.”

Initiated in 2014, the Science Prize for Women serves as a testament to the achievements of women in the field of science, particularly those undertaking initiatives that bolster science and technology capabilities and promote gender equality within the ASEAN region.
