DEPED UNDERSCORES RESPONSIBLE USE OF AI IN BASIC EDUCATION

/ 27 February 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Education has emphasized the importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly into the country’s basic education system.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the department aims to prepare Filipino learners for a future where AI is widely used, while ensuring that its application remains safe, ethical, and equitable.

“Education must be both protected and future-ready,” Angara said. “We will harness AI to address learning gaps, improve governance, and support teachers—but always with safeguards, transparency, and strong human oversight.”

Angara made the statement as DepEd welcomed the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Innovation (NAICRI), an initiative led by the Department of Science and Technology on Thursday.

Even prior to NAICRI’s establishment, DepEd had already been institutionalizing AI integration through three core pillars: AI in Education, Education on AI, and AI for Education Systems. These initiatives are anchored on learner protection and human-centered innovation.

Among DepEd’s key AI-driven programs are:

Project TALINO, a digital mapping platform that provides real-time data on school needs to strengthen evidence-based planning and encourage private sector participation;

Project DUNONG, which automates the National Qualifying Examination for School Heads to enhance efficiency and accuracy in selecting school leaders; and

Project SALIKSEEK, a generative AI-powered rapid-response tool that allows DepEd personnel to access structured education data within seconds.
