THE DEPARTMENT of Education is set to construct 15,000 classrooms in partnership with the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Center in 2025 after the two agencies entered into USD1 million worth of Technical Assistance Agreement on Friday.
In a statement, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the partnership is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directives “to improve the quality of education and the learning environment.”
The project will be under the PPP for School Infrastructure Program Phase III, with more streamlined planning and implementation to help address classroom backlogs.
The DepEd said about 1,600 schools in nine regions would be covered by the construction of 15,000 classrooms.
This will help address classroom congestion and benefit more than 600,000 learners nationwide.
The DepEd, meanwhile, is exploring the possibility of securing packages for classroom construction, including access to sustainable energy, Internet connectivity, water systems, furniture, and fixtures.
Other “innovative” PPP features are also being sought, including “bundled campus development, school libraries, and other essential infrastructure.”
The DepEd has recorded a shortage of 165,000 classrooms, up from the previous backlog of 159,000. (PNA)
