DEPED EXPANDS 2025 SUMMER PROGRAMS

11 April 2025

THE DEPARTMENT of Education has officially launched its 2025 Summer Programs, adopting a whole-of-community approach to strengthen foundational and grade-level competencies among learners across key stages in public schools nationwide.

Aimed at addressing gaps in reading and mathematics through interactive tutorials and targeted interventions, the programs will focus on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension in reading; and number sense, basic operations, and problem-solving in mathematics.

“We are dedicated to creating opportunities for all students to thrive. Our summer programs are designed to provide the necessary support and resources to help learners overcome challenges and achieve their full potential,” said Education Secretary Sonny Angara.

For Key Stage 1, DepEd will pilot the Bawat Bata Makababasa Program—a 20-day tutorial initiative intended to improve reading proficiency among early-grade learners. Beyond reading instruction, the program includes nutrition and vision screening to support holistic learning. It also focuses on enhancing teacher effectiveness, assessment strategies, and learner access to reading materials.

The pilot phase will target Grades 1 to 3 learners in Region 9 and select divisions in Regions 6 and 7 that were affected by the recent Mt. Kanlaon eruption.

Meanwhile, the Literacy Remediation Program will cater to Grade 3 learners identified as “Low Emerging” based on the CRLA End-of-School-Year 2024-2025 results. It will be implemented in all regions except Region 9, the affected divisions in Regions 6 and 7, and the 10 schools participating in the 2025 Learning Camp.

For Key Stages 2 to 4, DepEd will roll out the Summer Academic Remedial Program for Grades 4 to 12 learners who failed one or two subjects during the school year. Early-grade learners who failed subjects will instead be directed to reading-focused programs, depending on availability in their respective divisions.

Regional offices will also continue their respective remediation programs to provide additional reading and math support to Grades 4 to 12 learners, ensuring they can progress to the next grade level with the necessary competencies.

Additionally, DepEd will conduct the 2025 Learning Camp—a four-week intervention piloted in 10 selected schools across the MATATAG pilot regions: Regions I, II, VII, XII, the National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and CARAGA. The camp builds on insights from the National Learning Camp and aims to strengthen teacher capacity.

Learners identified as needing targeted support are required to attend the applicable Summer Programs.

To support educators, DepEd will provide incentives for teachers participating in summer sessions, including vacation service credits and professional recognition. The grant of vacation service credits is exclusive of the 30-day maximum allowable service credits.

“We recognize that our teachers are at the heart of learning recovery. These incentives are a way to value their dedication and expertise, particularly during the summer break,” Angara said.

Data generated from the Summer Programs will be used to enhance the implementation of the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning Program. This integration aims to better identify persistent learning gaps and refine intervention strategies for foundational skills and academic recovery.
