/ 24 July 2025

EDUCATION  Secretary Sonny Angara conducted an on-site inspection of several flood-hit schools in Malabon and Navotas following recent heavy rains that caused widespread damage to public school infrastructure.

Angara visited Guillermo Sanchez Memorial School and Tinajeros Elementary School in Malabon City, as well as Tanza Elementary School and Tanza High School in Navotas City.

He was accompanied by Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval and Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco.

The inspection aimed to assess the extent of the damage caused by the flooding and to discuss immediate steps for the repair and rehabilitation of the affected schools, including the replacement of damaged learning equipment and facilities.

According to the latest situation report from the Department of Education Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service, a total of 24,648 schools across the country have suspended in-person classes due to inclement weather.

Initial reports show that 1,794 classrooms sustained minor damage, 540 suffered major damage, and 531 were totally destroyed. Additionally, 208 hygiene facilities were reported damaged.

“Tuloy-tuloy ang pagtutok ng DepEd sa kaligtasan at kalidad ng learning spaces ng mga mag-aaral at guro sa panahon ng sakuna,” Angara said.
