DEPED CHIEF, LITERACY COORDINATING COUNCIL TACKLE LITERACY INITIATIVES

EDUCATION Secretary Sonny Angara met with representatives and members of the Literacy Coordinating Council during its 157th meeting to discuss ongoing literacy initiatives.

During the meeting on Monday, LCC presented their recent accomplishments and upcoming plans, focusing on improving both basic and functional literacy nationwide.

According to DepEd, the Philippine Statistics Authority also reported on the upcoming Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey, which will cover 720,000 individuals across 180,336 households.

Angara requested a further analysis of how literacy is measured in other countries to address discrepancies between the Philippines’ high literacy rates and its low rankings in international assessments.

Also present during the meeting were Congressman Roman Romulo, PIA Director-General Jose Torres, Jr., PNU President Dr. Bert Tuga, and Synergia Foundation CEO Dr. Milwida Guevara. Representing the council members were DepEd Assistant Secretary Janir Ty Datukan, Dir. Anna Liza Bonagua, Dir. Girlie Grace Casimiro-Igtiben, Mr. Darrel Winthrop Torres, Ms. Josephine Babaran, Dr. Maria Azela Tamayo, and Mr. Adnan P. Ahmad (Senate – OS Gatchalian).
