THE ALLIANCE of Concerned Teachers pressed the Commission on Elections to pay the additional P2,000 compensation of poll workers who rendered overtime work during the May 9, 2022 elections.

The group also submitted the names of more than 5,000 teachers who are eligible for the benefits.

“Sana naman ay maibigay na agad itong ipinangako ng Comelec dahil kailangan na ito ng mga guro ngayon lalo pa at sumisirit ang presyo ng mga bilihin,” Raymond Basilio, the group’s secretary general, said.

“Huwag din sanang idahilan na ‘di na-confirm ang appointments ng ilang Comelec commissioners dahil naglaan naman talaga ng dagdag na trabaho ang mga poll workers at dapat ay kagyat na silang mabayaran,” he added.

The group earlier called on the Senate to exempt from tax the honoraria of poll workers.

The imposition of 5 percent tax on election service pay began in 2018 and has since been the subject of protests among teachers who constitute the majority of poll workers.

Three bills seeking to exempt from tax the election pay of teachers are pending in the Senate.
