CHR SUPPORTS ESTABLISHMENT OF SAFETY INTERNET EDUCATION PROGRAM IN BASIC EDUCATION
THE COMMISSION on Human Rights expressed support on Monday for a measure to establish a Safety Internet Education Program within the basic education curriculum.
The CHR highlighted the urgent need for internet safety education in the country.
It referenced Senate Bill 2934, which seeks to complement Republic Act No. 11930, the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children Act, and the Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials Act.
The measure aims to equip children with the necessary knowledge and responsible attitudes toward the internet.
“The Commission emphasizes that the urgency to act has never been greater, as the internet is an integral part of children’s lives. A child’s right to safety should not be confined to the physical world—it must extend to the digital landscape where they learn, interact, and grow,” said the Commission.
“By institutionalizing internet safety education, we are taking a proactive, rights-based approach to ensure that young Filipinos are equipped to protect themselves and think critically, especially in the context of the digital age,” it added.
The CHR also commended Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada for advancing this vital initiative to enhance online safety for children.
By integrating internet safety education into schools, the CHR believes the state is empowering Filipino children with the tools to navigate online spaces responsibly, helping to create a safer digital environment for all.
