CHED URGED TO IMPOSE MORATORIUM ON TUITION AND OTHER FEES INCREASES

/ 11 March 2025

THE KABATAAN Partylist is calling on the Commission on Higher Education to impose an indefinite moratorium on tuition and other fee increases.

This call comes in light of proposed tuition and other fee hikes in both private and public universities for the upcoming school year.

The youth group’s appeal was also expressed in House Resolution No. 0009.

“Is a diploma worth millions of pesos for the youth to obtain? What kind of right requires Filipino families, students, and young people to struggle with millions just to access it? Education is a right, not a commodity,” said Kabataan Partylist Spokesperson and First Nominee Atty. Renee Co.

The group emphasized that everyone has the right to quality education.

“Education isn’t like a can of sardines with a price tag that increases due to inflation or the capitalist desire for profit. It’s a right,” Co stressed.

“If CHED approves the Tuition and Other Fees Increase (TOFI), it will be abandoning its mandate to every Filipino student. This will lead to an ‘education fee fever’ in schools nationwide, which won’t just push students to skip classes, but also cause them to drop out,” Co added.
