CHED TO ISSUE SHOW CAUSE ORDERS VS UST, NU

/ 8 September 2020

THE COMMISSION on Higher Education will issue show cause orders against the National University and the University of Santo Tomas for their alleged violation of the guidelines released by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Diseases and CHED advisories in relation to Covid19.

CHED has completed its fact-finding report and has submitted it to the IATF and the Department of the Interior and Local Government for proper action.

“As far as violations of CHED advisories are concerned, show cause orders will be issued to NU and UST requiring them to explain why sanctions should not be imposed on its officers, teaching and non-teaching personnel for its failure to comply with the guidelines of CHED,” said CHED Chairman Prospero De Vera III.

The IATF, through a resolution released on September 3, 2020, said it will allow collegiate student athletes in areas under General Community Quarantine and Modified General Community Quarantine to resume training.

CHED said it will organize a Technical Working Group composed of officials from CHED, the Philippine Sports Commission, the Department of Health, Games and Amusement Board, and representatives of collegiate leagues to craft guidelines this week.

“This new IATF resolution allowing collegiate students to train, tasks CHED with the responsibility to formulate the guidelines. We will use a whole of nation approach and benefit from the expertise of the PSC, DOH, GAB and the various leagues that have members schools, like the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, National Collegiate Athletic Association, State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association, and Private Schools Athletic Association, incorporate learnings from the UST and NU cases,” De Vera said.

“We will also listen and learn from the best practices of the professional leagues like the Philippine Basketball Association, Chooks to Go 3X3, and the Philippine Football League that are now doing supervised training. Many of the best practices of these leagues were taken from those used by international sports bodies. The inputs from the national sports associations will be taken through the PSC,” he added.
