CHED HEAD HIT OVER ‘NO CHRISTMAS BREAK’ PLAN

/ 14 September 2020

STUDENTS strongly rejected the plan of the Commission on Higher Education to do away with Christmas and summer breaks.

CHED Chairman Prospero De Vera III earlier said that students are given a Christmas break to reconnect with their families. Since students are homebound, he said there is no more need for a holiday break.

“You put a Christmas break because students have to go home, they’re not going home. They’re already at home,”  De Vera said in a recent interview.

The CHED chairman is also eyeing  the possibility of removing summer breaks.

De Vera’s pronouncement was widely condemned by students. They called the official ‘heartless’ and ‘out-of-touch’.

National Union of Students President Raoul Manuel slammed De Vera’s statement, saying the official sees students as ‘robots’.

“Ito ang mantra ng ‘flexibility’ sa edukasyon man o sa trabaho: we are disposable robots na pipigain for output until hindi na natin kaya! Hayop kayo! Mga walang puso!” Manuel wrote on Twitter.
