STUDENTS of the Basud National High School in Camarines Norte won in the STEM Project Competition in Thailand.
The team’s winning entry was an anti-kidnapping device, a prototype gadget to detect the location of an individual.
Grade 9 students Marinel Bayani, Danielle Faith Elias, Bruce Jairius Guadines, and Ralph Paul Chaezar Ablaneda, with their coach Isagani Musa created the Autonomous Raspberry Pi-based Voice and Pulse Oximeter-Activated Anti-Kidnapping Device with GPS Infrared Camera Surveillance System.
The gadget can detect a change in pulse or heartbeat, has GPS and an infrared camera. An individual can also send a photo or video if he/she is in danger.
“Kailangan po na kahit papaano ay magkaroon tayo ng safety at security tuwing tayo ay lalabas sa ating tahanan. Nais po naming makapagbigay ng seguridad sa lahat ng indibidwal, ‘di lamang sa mga bata at kababaihan,” Guadines said.
Guadines said the project was a legitimate idea of the students, and he only guided them, with the help of scientists with knowledge of this type of technology.
The STEM Project Competition aimed to help and enhance the problem-solving skills of young people using STEM-integrated knowledge.
