ANGARA URGES STUDENTS TO REDISCOVER POWER OF BOOKS

/ 13 March 2026

EDUCATION Secretary Sonny Angara called on learners to strengthen their literacy through reading, stressing that books remain essential tools in improving the comprehension and skills of Filipino students.

Speaking at the opening of the Philippine Book Festival 2026 on Thursday, Angara emphasized that even as the country embraces digital transformation, books continue to play a vital role in education.

“While we are moving forward toward digital transformation, we remain invested in what continues to matter—encouraging our learners to strengthen their literacy through books,” Angara said.

He added that books serve as powerful gateways to knowledge and cultural identity for Filipino learners.

“Books serve as vital bridges connecting our learners to new knowledge and to their identity. Under the vision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., we continue to expand efforts to help students appreciate the power of books,” he said.

The four-day festival, organized by the National Book Development Board, is being held at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall in Pasig City. It serves as the country’s premier showcase for Filipino-authored books and creative works.

The NBDB, the government’s central agency for the publishing industry, launched the Philippine Book Festival in 2023 to address long-standing gaps in the distribution of and access to quality, affordable Filipino books.
