THE ALLIANCE of Concerned Teachers slammed the Department of Education for disregarding teachers’ right to ample rest as their vacation became shorter due to post and pre-school-year requirements and activities.

The group made the statement after the DepEd announced that the opening of classes in public schools for School Year 2023-2024 is on August 29.

“Matapos ang official school days ng school year 2022-2023, nagpatuloy pa ang trabaho ng mga guro sa end of school year rites. Sinundan pa ng pre-assessments para sa National Learning Camp. Bukod pa rito, hindi pa magkandaugaga ang mga guro dahil sa mga resikito para sa benepisyo tulad ng IPCRF at RPMS. Idagdag mo pa ang ongoing enrolment at paghahanda para sa brigada eskwela na isasagawa mula August 14-19. Sa kabila ng tambak na trabaho ng mga guro sa panahon ng dapat na bakasyon, hanggang ngayon ay wala pa ring PVP guidelines na inilalabas ang DepEd. Tila nasanay na ang DepEd sa labis na pagpapatrabaho sa mga guro nang walang urgency sa pagbibigay ng nararapat na kompensasyon at ang mas nakakadismaya pa, laging delayed ang mga benepisyo,” Vladimer Quetua, the group’s chairperson, said.

“Pagtalikod ito ng DepEd sa karapatan ng mga guro sa sapat na pahinga, at pananamantala sa sigasig at di-matatawarang serbisyo ng mga guro para ibangon ang edukasyon. Hindi man lang inisip ng ahensya maaaring idulot ng kawalan ng sapat na pahinga sa kalidad ng edukasyon,” Quetua added.

As the start of classes nears, ACT appealed to DepEd to urgently release the PVP guidelines and reassess its plans for the school year.

It also implored that the agency give due consideration to teachers as they need sufficient rest.

The group called upon the Civil Service Commission to closely examine this issue, considering that it has been recently brought up and discussed with them in dialogues.
