XAVIER U LAUNCHES GRASSROOTS CONSUMER EDUCATION PROGRAM
/ 20 December 2025
THE ECONOMICS Society of Xavier University–Ateneo de Cagayan launched a grassroots consumer education initiative in Barangay Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City, aimed at strengthening consumer awareness and literacy at the community level.
Dubbed “PAKIGSAYOD: Maalam na Konsumidor, Unang Lakang sa Paglamo,” the program seeks to equip residents with practical knowledge on consumer rights, informed purchasing, and responsible decision-making amid rising prices and the expansion of digital markets.
The rollout was supported by the Xavier University Social Involvement and Advocacy Program, the Economics Department, the Department of Trade and Industry–Misamis Oriental, the Cagayan de Oro City Price Coordinating Council, and barangay officials.
As part of the pilot phase, organizers conducted a focus group discussion with residents to document everyday consumer challenges, including price volatility, risks in online transactions, and access to reliable product information.
Insights gathered from the discussions will be used to refine the program’s curriculum and guide its planned expansion to other barangays in the city.
XU-ECOSOC said the project reflects a long-term commitment to building empowered and informed consumers who can better protect their rights and contribute to a more transparent local marketplace.
