VISAYAS STATE U STUDENT BAGS AWARDS IN NAT’L GEODETIC ENGINEERING CONFERENCES
A GRADUATING student from the Visayas State University won awards for her Geodetic Coordinate Conversion app.
Shekaina Love Aniban bagged the Best Research and Best Presenter awards at the first-ever National Geodetic Engineering Summit and the 15th Geodetic Engineering Student Conference.
Aniban was one of three research presenters chosen from higher education institutions offering the GE degree program, VSU said.
Her winning research project offers a solution to the time-consuming process of coordinate transformation and conversion.
The mobile application automates the computation of 30 pairs of conversions, reducing the chances of human error. The app is awaiting patent approval.
“Actually from the title alone, I developed a mobile application that is simply like a calculator that can solve Geodetic Coordinate Conversion. I chose this [idea] since the process of solving coordinate transformation and conversion is quite too long. And of course, if we do this manually, there is a big chance of getting a human error,” she explained.
Aniban credited her thesis adviser Dr. Jannet Bencure for providing valuable guidance and advice, which contributed to her success.
With the theme “Geodæsia: Geodetic Engineering and Science at the Forefront of the Data Revolution”, the NatGES x GESC 2023 aimed to explore the advancements in the field.
The event held at the University of the Philippines-Diliman gathered GE students and professionals nationwide.
