/ 10 April 2021

A PROFESSOR from the University of Santo Tomas will return to Cornell University as a Philippine-American Educational Foundation’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow.

Sponsored by the United States Department of State, Professor Philipina Marcelo, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, will study Innovation and Sustainability Management in Cornell, PAEF Secretariat Executive Director Julio Amador III said.

UST said that this new feat makes Marcelo a two-time PAEF fellow. She received the Fulbright-Philippine Agriculture Scholarship Grant from 2002-2007 that earned her the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Food Science and Technology also from Cornell.

“Since her return to UST in 2008, she has been a researcher of the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences and a faculty member of the Department of Chemical Engineering,” the university said.

In the course of nine years, Marcelo made six engineering programs for UST.

“Marcelo pioneered the granting of international double degrees, with the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree jointly awarded by UST and the Catholic University of America, and the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering major in Metallurgical Engineering awarded by UST and Curtin University’s Western Australian School of Mines,” UST said.

Among Marcelo’s achievements are the Full Accreditation of all six programs by the Philippine Technological Council, the country’s provisional member of the Washington Accord; the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance Group certification for BS Chemical Engineering and BS Electronics Engineering; and the Commission on Higher Education Center of Excellence in Chemical Engineering.

She was also recognized for her efforts in attaining UST’s Center of Development in Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering programs and the Level III Re-Accreditation by the Philippine Accrediting.
