UST PROF FILES COMPLAINT VS DIRECTORS OVER VIRAL PHOTO

/ 12 April 2024

THE FORMER adviser of TomasinoWeb, a digital media organization of the University of Santo Tomas, has filed an administrative complaint against two directors, noting their breach of freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

TomasinoWeb reported that its former adviser, Leo Laparan, II, reported Office for Student Affairs Director Ma. Cecillo Tio Cuison and Assistant Director Ma. Regina Arriero at the office of the university vice rector.

“The OSA Directors have no right to dictate upon my area of expertise in guiding TomasinoWeb,” Laparan said in a report by the publication.

Cuison has been on a medical leave since March.

UST in February has been under fire for ordering TomasinoWeb to take down a photo of students in a convenience store whose uniforms bear some resemblance to the 7/11 crew’s uniform.

The issue garnered national attention, noting that the UST administration has been ‘repressing’ the students’ press freedom.

UST has since issued a statement and said it will review its policies and guidelines after the issue went viral.
