UP PROF ARRESTED IN QUEZON CITY

/ 7 February 2023

A PROFESSOR of the University of the Philippines was arrested by police officers in her home in Quezon City on Monday.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers said that Professor Melania Flores of the Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas was served a warrant of arrest by policemen who pretended to be personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The group denounced the arrest for being violative of the agreement between UP and the Department of the Interior and Local Government that requires authorities to notify UP officials before entering the campus.

Walang anumang notice o subpoena siyang natanggap pero may na-issue na warrant of arrest,” it said.

Meanwhile, All UP Academic Employees Union said that the arresting officers did not properly explain the charges against Flores.

Flores at dinala sa Camp Caringal,” it said in a separate statement.

The union urged the authorities to immediately release the professor.
