/ 10 February 2024

A TOTAL of 33 students from the University of Baguio were trained to help prevent suicide among the youth in a bid to help promote mental health awareness among its students.

UB said the students were trained to help with suicide awareness and prevention to help crack down on the growing concern about suicide.

Part of the training is spotting early warning signs of suicide, as well as managing students who are at risk of self-harm.

“The college years are often portrayed as a time of self-discovery, new friendships, and academic growth. However, beneath the surface, many students grapple with the silent struggle of depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns,” UB said on its website.

“The pressures of academic performance, social expectations, peer pressure, and even parental pressure are the primary causes of depression in young adults,” it added.

UB’s Center for Counseling and Student Development and the UB Office of Student Affairs spearheaded the project

According to the World Health Organization, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds.
