UE URGED TO INCREASE SCHOLARSHIP QUOTA

/ 16 September 2022

A STUDENT group at the University of the East urged the school administration to increase the scholarship quota for the first semester of Academic Year 2022-2023.

In a letter to UE President Ester Garcia, the Central Student Council pointed out that the cap on scholarship be removed as there were “significant increase of enrollees.”

“This council acknowledges the rationality behind limiting the number of scholars, being anchored on the financial needs of the university as a profit-driven institution,” it said.

“The Central Student Council implores for a reasonable increase of the scholarship quota for this semester and the following ones,” it added.

The university imposed a seven percent quota on scholarship grants citing low enrollment as the reason behind the policy.

However, the student body pointed out that the reimplementation of face-to-face classes this semester is “an indication of our reviving the era of celebrating student achievements and efforts without undue restrictions.”

“Given an existing quota, what are the parameters that decide whether or not a student would be considered or is eligible to be a scholar among his/her peers if all the candidates to receive scholarship have similar GWAs and the same number of units?” the group said.

The CSC called for a dialogue with Garcia and other university officials to address the issues hounding the scholarship grants.
