/ 4 December 2022

A TEAM from the University of the East bagged third place in a recent international online accounting debate competition.

Racky Marson Escueta and student Kathleen Zetha Aquino were the lone Philippine and foreign team that competed against 19 Indonesian teams from 13 different Indonesian universities in the two-day meet.

According to UE, the competition followed the modified British Parliamentary debate format and used a point system in determining the scores of each team.

Aquino was nominated as one of the top five best speakers in the elimination round.

From the 20 teams, 16 were selected to advance to the semi-final round.

The final round consisted of four teams, namely UE students, Cyber Dino Asia from Asia Cyber University, Viva Justicia from Universitas Diponegoro, and Ad Poltekfrom Politeknik Negeri Malang.

The motion given in the finals was “The House will provide social assistance in the form of cryptocurrency in order to suppress the circulation of physical money.”

The feat, according to the university, marked the first time a UE team participated and won such an award in an accounting debate competition that included five matches spread across the elimination round up to the final round.

Hosted by the Student Association of Accounting under the Faculty of Economics and Business, State University of Surabaya, Indonesia, the competition was held last month via Zoom.
