UE STUDENTS, FACULTY MEMBERS APPEAL QUOTA ON SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS

/ 11 April 2021

STUDENT groups and faculty members of the University of the East filed a petition to the school’s Board of Trustees over a seven percent quota on scholarship grants for the 2nd semester of Academic Year 2020-2021.

The University Student Council, Central Student Council and Faculty Association said the newly approved policy is disturbing, knowing there was still no response from the administration regarding the previous revocation of scholarships.

“The issue is aggravated by the unjust decisions of the administration and the unaddressed grievances of the students, further burdening them and putting their financial security at risk,” the groups said in a letter to David Chua, vice chairman of the university.

The groups asked the school administration for the basis and computation of the seven percent quota policy, and the disqualification of students excluded from the quota.

“Would the allocation to each college be also based on the number of enrolled students per college? How then, would the scholarships be allocated among the courses per college, given that there would be significant variations in General Weighted Average in consideration of the unit load and difficulty level of each course along with the unique grading preferences of each professor,” the groups asked.

It argued such policy change should be effected and lawfully made known to the students in respect to their right to information.

“Consultation and dissemination regarding the intent to revise scholarship policy should have taken place first. It is contrary to policy for having only approved memorandum, without any specifics, be made known to the students,” they said.

The group reiterated the UE administration is acting as if the student body and faculty have absolutely nothing to say.

“To be perfectly honest, we cannot merely say yes to anything as blatantly unreasonable as this. The students, therefore, call for nothing less than a dialogue with higher management to settle this disconnecting issue. We demand an explanation,” they said.
