UE STUDENTS DENOUNCE 7% SCHOOL WIDE QUOTA ON SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS
STUDENT groups at University of the East decried the school-wide seven percent quota on scholarship grants for Academic Year 2021-2022.
UE President Esther Garcia maintained the quota applies to all scholarship recipients regardless if they fall under the ‘new or old scholarship policy’.
“The 7 percent quota applies to all scholarship recipients,” Garcia said in a letter to the student councils.
However, the groups stressed that it is unreasonable to impose a more unfavorable policy that would effectively eliminate the scholarship for deserving students.
“How would the scholarships be distributed among courses at each college, provided that there would be significant variations in General Point Average due to the unit load and level of difficulty of each course,” they said.
“In addition, each professor has different grading preferences as to their academic freedom. Furthermore, if lower year levels naturally have higher GPAs, should higher and lower levels be separated for an equitable assessment,” they added.
The groups reiterated the cap on scholarship should not be imposed as it will further burden the students and put their financial security at risk.
“We plead immediate action be taken because the decision to enroll the significantly impacted students should be realized ahead of time. The UE community relies on your honorable office’s words and actions,” they said.
Earlier this month, Garcia said incoming first year students and old students who will be granted scholarships for the first time will be assessed using the new scholarship policy.
She added the old scholarship policy will be implemented for old students who have already been admitted to the scholarship program of the university.
