UA CREATES OIL SPILL CONTAINMENT BOOMS

/ 21 March 2023

THE UNIVERSITY of Antique has created improvised oil spill containment booms to help prevent the further spread of the oil spill in Mindoro.

The oil spill caused by the sinking of the MT Princess Empress which was carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel had spread from Mindoro to Palawan.

UA President Dr. Pablo Crespo, Jr. said that the booms will be used to stop the spread of the oil spill and reduce the possibility of polluting the shorelines.

The booms are made up of plastic bottles, bamboo pole, net, and hay or coconut husk and hair.

“The proper time to act is this time, because if we have to wait for weeks, it would be too late,” Crespo said.

UA has two campuses that could be affected by the oil spill in the Island of Caluya and the northern municipality of Libertad.

All UA campuses were directed to make containment booms.
