TUP STUDENTS WANT FREEDOM WALL BACK
THE STUDENT Government of the Technological University of the Philippines Manila campus has sought the return of the ‘freedom wall’ which was used by students to express themselves.
In a letter to University President Jesus Rodrigo Torres, the student body council called for an inquiry on the removal of the wall.
“As sole representative in advancing the concerns of the student body, we are manifesting an inquiry regarding the reason/s for this sudden action,” it said.
The freedom wall, located at the College of Liberal Arts and College of Science lobby, has been used for years by students to express their ideas relating to current events or draw artworks without prior administrative approval.
However, it was recently converted by the school into a hanging wall garden.
“This action limits the students’ rights to freely express their thoughts through different means, by utilizing the Freedom wall as their platform of engagement,” the group said.
“We are not against making the university cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing. However, we believe that this could be done without removing the said freedom wall,” it added.
