/ 14 September 2025

THE SILLIMAN University Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), together with volunteer health professionals and student groups, conducted a medical and dental mission for fisherfolk and their families in Dumaguete’s coastal barangays.

Led by IEMS Director Dr. Aileen P. Maypa, the outreach served residents of Barangays Bantayan, Piapi, Looc, and Tinago, aiming to address basic health needs in underserved coastal communities.

More than 75 individuals received free medical consultations, while at least 35 availed of dental services, including extractions. Free medicines were also distributed.

Student volunteers from the IEMS organization Students Towards Environmental Welfare and Research for Development and Sustainability, headed by Theodore Bradshaw, assisted throughout the activity.

The medical team was led by Dr. Iris Maravillas Garcia, cardiologist and Silliman University High School alumna, together with doctors from the Silliman University Medical Center Foundation, Inc.

Dentists from Cebu and Dumaguete also volunteered, alongside nurses, medical technologists, and pharmacists.

In total, 32 volunteers contributed to the success of the mission, reinforcing Silliman University’s commitment to both public service and environmental stewardship.
